California Part 5: San Francisco
Welcome to part 5 of my California road-trip blog. If you haven't seen the others yet, please check them out! This instalment is going to be a small one for two reasons: I need to leave the house in 20 minutes; the weather in San Francisco was terrible!
After leaving the natural majesty of Yosemite, we drove through the night, 200 miles West to San Francisco. Now, San Francisco is a photographers dream and I had high hopes of producing some custom panoramic wall art of the Golden Gate Bridge... the thing San Francisco is probably best known for.
Unfortunately, San Francisco is also known as "Fog City" due to the ubiquitous low-lying cloud. Due to its varied topography and the cold marine air coming off the Pacific, the city has its own micro-climate. If you ever find yourself in San Francisco on a cold, miserable day, get out of the city by a few miles and you're likely to find some glorious, warm sunshine. In 3 days the only blue sky I saw was on the final morning, from our hotel window with the world's worst hangover! Matt (my travel companion) and I still managed to get out and see the sights (what was visible) and have a good time though...

Pier 39 in San Francisco is famous for its sea lions and definitely worth checking out (maybe pinch nose if you're not a fan of fishy breath though).

There we go, a very short blog! If you're planning a trip to San Francisco, make sure you put some warm, waterproof clothing in your bag. Also, if you intend visiting Alcatraz island, book well in advance as we missed out.
Hopefully I'll be able to get another blog out next week, featuring otters, elephant seals, giant redwood trees and hidden beaches. Big Sur and the Pacific Coast Highway coming soon!
