Lanzarote: Que Isla Tan Fascinante!
Hello! It has occurred to me that I have been neglecting this blog somewhat so here's a quickie! After a very hectic few months, I'm off for some much needed rest and recuperation in Italy... but I realise that I haven't even shared the photos form my last trip yet (apart from a couple on instagram).
Back in March, I visited Lanzarote, one of the Canary Islands off the West Coast of Africa that are under Spanish administration. I didn't know what to expect but I seem to recall having a lot of fun exploring the fascinating volcanic island. We stayed in Costa Teguise which served its purpose but hiring a cheap car meant we could escape the leathery-skinned Brits abroad, normally found beached somewhere between the pool and the bar.
Anyway, I said this was going to be a quick blog so here are my top 12 pics from the trip (click on image to enlarge) :
If you're looking for an active break that won't break the bank then I would definitely recommend Lanzarote and I imagine I will return at some point in the future. Here are some tips if you're planning a trip:
- Like to surf? Check out Famara beach on the West coast - one of the most picturesque beaches I've been too, surrounded by volcanic cliffs and offering some decent waves.
- Get the ferry to la Graciosa island (but don't miss the last one back because you'll be stuck overnight or have to charter a speedboat... which can be fun!), hire bikes and explore. The beaches are almost deserted and, if you're lucky, you'll see the same glorious osprey as we did (the photos weren't good enough to make the selection though).
- Do a bus tour round Timanfaya National Park to learn about how the island was formed by volcanic eruptions. This was the most touristy thing we did (I'm not a fan of coach trips) - it was interesting and the scenery was dramatic but the trip didn't lend itself to capturing dramatic photos (shooting through the window of a moving bus).
- Try to find local wildlife! Depending on the time of year, Lanzarote can be an ornithological treat! We saw petrels, shearwaters, various terns, had a glimpse of a barbary falcon (and several Kestrel false alarms!), stumbled across a stone-curlew... but sadly we didn't see a bustard which the island is famous for!
